McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was greeted by dozens of protesters as she visited McMinnville High School Wednesday afternoon.
The McMinnville School District announced on its website that DeVos "requested a visit of McMinnville Schools to learn about the excellent instructional practices making a difference for students."
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is headed to Oregon and Washington state this week, but it looks like she won't get a universally warm welcome. In fact, there's a big protest brewing for Friday night, when DeVos will be the keynote speaker at a gala hosted by the Washington Policy Center, a free-market think tank. More below.

Vose Elementary School showed off its brand new building Friday.
Thanks to a bond, the Beaverton School District was able to redo the school. The green and grey building houses hundreds of students. In an assembly on Friday, the principal, Veronica Galvan, and staff showed off the new school to parents and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici.
The school took about a year to build.
"Went right down to the wire the kids and the families weren't allowed in the building until the first day of school," Galvan said.
BEAVERTON, OR — School district officials will join Mayor Denny Doyle and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici Friday to dedicate the newly rebuilt Vose Elementary School in east Beaverton. Vose Elementary is one of four schools to be demolished and rebuilt thanks to a $680 million bond approved by voters in May 2014. Three all-new schools will also be constructed as part of the bond.
The dedication ceremony will take place at Vose Elementary, 11350 S.W. Denney Rd., beginning at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 6.
Six members of Congress said Tuesday they want an update from NCAA president Mark Emmert on the progress of a 2016 "pledge" to diversify the college coaching and administrative hiring pools.
Last year the NCAA asked college presidents to sign a pledge to address college athletics' diversity challenges.

WASHINGTON — Over a year ago, the NCAA began asking member schools to get behind a pledge developing better hiring practices that promoted diversity and equality. Without an answer on any progress on that pledge in a year, Congress is now asking questions.
Led by Suzanne Bonamici, a Democrat from Oregon, lawmakers have sent correspondence to Mark Emmert, the head of the NCAA, to demand answers on the organization's progress toward increased hiring diversity.
