In the wake of this year's horrific wildfire season, the U.S. House on Wednesday passed legislation aimed at reversing the rising fire danger in the nation's forests and grasslands.

The measure, passed on a 232-188 vote, would increase timber harvests and relax some key environmental rules. It also seeks to relieve the U.S. Forest Service from being forced to cannibalize its fire prevention budget to pay for the rapidly escalating costs of combating wild-land blazes.

CANNON BEACH — When Gearhart resident Arden Bryce heard Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici tell the story of her and her daughter, Selah, on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives back in May, she couldn't help but feel emotional.

Bryce emailed Bonamici earlier in the year when House Republicans first started proposing plans to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Bryce, whose daughter has been diagnosed with autism and a host of other medical issues, said she worries about how she would be able to afford the medication her daughter requires.

Statements

Thank you Chairman Schmidtlein, Vice Chairman Johanson, Commissioner Williamson, and Commissioner Broadbent. I represent the First Congressional District of Oregon in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and I appreciate the opportunity to testify before you today.

I am here today to express my support for a thoughtful and strong remedy that will recognize that our domestic manufacturers need to be able to compete on a level playing field, and also recognize the potential for growth in the renewable energy industry in Oregon and the United States.

After a summer of planetary upheaval, nobody can say the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space and Technology is ignoring the messages sent out by the quivering natural world.

After all, the committee scheduled a hearing on what we could learn from the solar eclipse.

It seems a fitting agenda for a committee that often seems to be operating in the dark.

YAMHILL — First District Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici would really like to meet Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Bonamici told participants in a Sept. 18 town hall audience in Yamhill that most secretaries of education pay frequent visits to the House education committee, on which she serves. But she said DeVos, confirmed by the Senate Feb. 7 on a 51-50 vote, requiring the vice president to cast a rare tiebreaker, has yet to make an appearance.
