Newman, D-La Grange, introduced the bill with Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, an Oregon Democrat. Newman said such debt collectors have "violated consumers' rights" and have received millions of dollars in forgivable PPP loans.
"It focuses on rebuilding the backbone of this country — working families, the middle class, the people who built this country," he said. Oregon's two Democratic senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, voted for the bill. Four of the state's five House members — all Democrats — voted for of the bill: Kurt Schrader, Suzanne Bonamici, Peter DeFazio and Earl Blumenauer.
On March 24, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici announced that her office will start accepting applications for a program known as Community Project Funding. The CPF project allows members of Congress to get federal funding for specific projects in their communities, an application process that is "highly competitive," according to a release from Bonamici's office.
