Velshi got Oregon congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici to Portland's Eastbank Esplanade before dawn to accommodate the east coast live airing. Bonamici talked about the hard times here. "There are many things that came together to create this stress, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic and I'm very concerned about the numbers that you're talking about," said Bonamici.
MSNBC brought the "Velshi" show to Portland as part of a nationwide tour. The show focused on the economic and medical strain the state is under because of COVID-19. Host Ali Velshi spoke to Dr. Smitha Chadaga (above), an internist from Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, as well as two Oregon members of Congress, Suzanne Bonamici and Earl Blumenauer.
A county public health staffer shared a link to the story in an email to her colleagues in public health and emergency management. The subject line: "This makes me sick" Saying she was "deeply concerned," Bonamici urged the Oregon Health Authority and Pacific Seafood to hold a virtual community meeting to answer questions from the community.
The pandemic has exacerbated food and housing insecurities, disproportionately impacting people who already face significant social and economic challenges, U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici said in a conference call with stakeholders Wednesday ahead of the holiday season.

Representative Suzanne Bonamici held an online discussion with the Oregon Food Bank. Matt Newell-Ching with the food bank says around 100,000 more Oregonians are receiving food assistance benefits than before the pandemic began.
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden and U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, along with U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, recently wrote a letter to Adm. Karl Schultz, the commandant of the Coast Guard, requesting that two additional cutters be stationed locally. "The community of Astoria is well-equipped to support the Coast Guard and its vessels in their mission here in Oregon," the lawmakers wrote.
On Twitter, Oregon Representative Suzanne Bonamici said this is an opportunity for Oregonians to work together and stop the spread. "COVID cases and hospitalizations in Oregon are surging quickly and we must work together to stop the spread," Rep Bonamici tweeted. "Please keep our communities and frontline workers safe by taking this freeze seriously."
