Washington, D.C.-- Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today signed a petition to reopen the government. The petition was brought forward under a procedure known as a discharge petition, which allows a majority of members to bypass the Speaker and require an up or down vote on a bill. The federal government has been closed since October 1, 2013, and House leaders have repeatedly refused requests to allow a vote to reopen the government that does not include provisions to delay or repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Washington, D.C. –Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today released the following statement calling on House Speaker John Boehner to allow a vote on compromise legislation to reopen the government.

"We should be voting on a resolution that will reopen the entire government. Instead, the Speaker is bringing us piecemeal bills that would fund only certain agencies or groups, will not be taken up by the Senate, and would be vetoed by the President."

“Today the House leadership forced a government shutdown in an attempt to block or delay implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I am deeply disappointed. It is a reckless path that will hurt our economy and cast a shadow of instability and uncertainty over the country.
