Transportation and Infrastructure
U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici is requesting $902,500 in funding for a landslide mitigation project in Astoria that would help protect a neighborhood from common winter flooding or the Big One — the Cascadia Subduction Earthquake that would impact a 600-mile fault located 70-100 miles off the West Coast of North America.
Both Bonamici and U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader included several regional projects in their Invest in America Act funds. Bonamici included nearly $19 million for nine projects in her proposals, mostly similar transportation-related work in Washington, Columbia, Clatsop and Multnomah counties. Bonamici represents Oregon's 1st Congressional District, which extends from parts of Washington, Yamhill and Multnomah counties to Clatsop County on the Oregon coast.
U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici secured $19.36 million within the transportation bill to go toward five transportation projects in Northwest Oregon. Bonamici represents Oregon's First Congressional District, which includes Washington, Yamhill, Clatsop and Columbia counties and part of Multnomah County. "The INVEST in America Act addresses the infrastructure needs of NW Oregon and the country, helps mitigate the climate crisis, and creates good-paying jobs," Bonamici said in an emailed statement.

"I was looking for projects that would benefit communities, create jobs, keep people safe," said Bonamici. "As the representative of the north coast, it's important to prepare for issues like landslides. We've already seen this in Astoria this winter."
Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D) in an interview: "I don't think the new service standards are necessary. They don't need to slow down. They could make the positive reforms without the delivery delays. And it would be serious, for example, if someone's waiting for medication, and they missed a day or two of medication, if someone has important information they need to make a business decision. Or, critically, if somebody's ballot doesn't arrive or they're sending in their ballot to vote by mail, their voice won't count. That's unacceptable. So, yes, it does matter. A day or two does matter."
U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici is pushing for federal funding to increase resources for small businesses throughout Columbia County. Bonamici, who will see her district shrink when Oregon gets a sixth representative in Congress, recently spoke with the Spotlight about redistricting, workforce development, redistricting, potential community projects, childcare and more.
Now, with Congress and the White House focused on transportation and infrastructure, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici — a Democrat who represents all of Washington County in the U.S. House of Representatives — is asking for $4 million to go toward safety improvements along Highway 8. Bonamici hopes to have that funding included in the bipartisan Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act, which Congress is expected to take up and pass this year.
"I'm going to do all I can to advocate for this project," Bonamici told Pamplin Media Group on Thursday, June 3, after meeting with community leaders and representatives from the Oregon Department of Transportation in Aloha.
Bonamici proposed nearly $10 million in projects in the 1st Congressional District. She sought funds for landslide mitigation in Astoria, money for Hillsboro's water system project, funds to renovate the Japan Institute Building in Portland, money for a nonprofit incubator development project in Beaverton, funds to buy a defibrillator for the Banks Fire District and money to set up a small-business center in St. Helens.
