Eighty-five Democratic lawmakers, led by Reps. Jamie Raskin (Md.), Suzanne Bonamici (Ore.) and Kathy Castor (Fla.), wrote to the Commerce Department on Thursday to oppose the appointment of David Legates to NOAA, saying he will "discredit the dedicated researchers at NOAA in their essential work." The agency recently hired Legates, an academic who has questioned the seriousness of climate change, for a top political role, riling many in the agency.

To assist working parents and children, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, who serves Oregon's 1st congressional district, launched the Oregon Child Care Advisory Board earlier this month. The board is composed of 12 members selected by Bonamici every two years. The board will advise the congresswoman on issues related to child care, including how federal legislation can be used to support children and working mothers effectively, such as the $50 billion Child Care Stabilization Fund, passed by the House of Representatives, which Bonamici introduced.

Senator Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said the Trump administration is trying to bully those who don't agree with his police tactics.

"Trump may admire dictators like Putin and Duterte, but there is no place for that behavior in Portland, in Oregon, or in the United States of America," said Merkley.

"Instead of working on a national plan to address the pandemic and save lives, Trump and his administration are wasting time threatening to withdraw funding from Portland and other cities," said Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore.

Oregon Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici stopped in Washington County Saturday afternoon to thank firefighters for their efforts in battling the Chehalem Mountain Fire.

She met with crews from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and heard from firefighters about what they needed to finish putting out hotspots from the wildfire.

Walden joined U.S. senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and fellow U.S representatives Peter DeFazio, Earl Blumenauer, Kurt Schrader and Suzanne Bonamici in a statement Wednesday morning announcing the disaster declaration.

FEMA quickly approved initial Emergency Declarations to provide federal funding to battle the fires.

"So many people have been evacuated or at risk of evacuation and so many towns have been destroyed," said Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR). "It's just absolutely devastating."

Bonamici and other lawmakers said more federal help will be needed in the aftermath of the fires. Representative Greg Walden (R-OR) said housing–specifically affordable housing–is a top priority.

Rep. Greg Walden, the only Republican in Oregon's delegation connected the speedy approval to a meeting he held with President Trump this week.
