Oregon Rep. Suzanne Bonamici has become the second member of the state's Congressional delegation to call for the resignation or removal of the president. Bonamici, whose district includes parts of Portland and ranges to the Oregon Coast, joined Rep. Earl Blumenauer in making the call after a pro-Trump mob breached the U.S. Capital.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) announced his safety via Twitter just after 1 p.m. Other U.S representatives, Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.), Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.), also confirmed their safety via Twitter in the afternoon. U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz (R-Ore.) also wassafe in his office for the duration of the event, according to a spokesperson.
Bonamici, an Oregon Democrat who represents the North Coast, said she and her staff are safe. "I'm OK," the congresswoman said. "But it's just awful. I'm concerned for the safety of everyone." Nick Clemens, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz, an Oregon Republican who called for an investigation into the presidential election, said the congressman and all his staff were safe and awaiting word on next steps. Clemens declined to discuss Bentz's position on the objections to the Electoral College vote.
Rep. Suzanne Bonamici was unequivocal who was to blame for the day's events. "Trump repeatedly incited this act of domestic terrorism, including encouraging armed protestors this very morning, steps from the Capitol. He must tell his supporters to leave the Capitol immediately before more people are hurt."
The Feb. 19 arrest sparked outrage, including from U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, a Beaverton Democrat whose House district includes all of Washington County. Bonamici has lobbied without success for Congress to pass a bill she has sponsored to keep ICE away from bus stops, schools, courthouses and other "sensitive locations."
