The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Columbia River In-Lieu and Treaty Fishing Access Sites Improvement Act, sending it to the president's desk to be signed into law.

Bonamici said she was grateful that the House passed the legislation to address historical injustices and honor the fishing treaty rights of four Columbia River Tribes.

There were audible sighs of relief in Oregon's business community after congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump reached an agreement on a new trade pact replacing NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Blumenauer and fellow Oregon Democratic Rep. Suzanne Bonamici both said the agreement contains a number of improvements that helped bring on board Democrats, who have been skeptical of free-trade deals.

The Trump administration is proposing changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The proposed changes could impact more than 20,000 people in Oregon starting in 2020.

Some of the changes were finalized this week. President Trump has said the new rules will help encourage SNAP recipients to find jobs, but local representatives are pushing back.

U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, along with U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici, met at north Portland's Village Market Friday to protest the changes.

More than 200,000 students say despite the promise of a job post-graduation from mostly for-profit colleges, they have nothing to show for it except mountains of debt.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos faced scrutiny from lawmakers on Capitol Hill for the Department of Education's implementation of a loan forgiveness rule aimed to help defrauded students called Borrower Defense.

"These students were misled and cheated and the fact that some of them may be making money doesn't mean they weren't defrauded," said Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, a Democrat from Oregon.
