Democratic lawmakers joined scores of scientists, health providers, environmental officials and activists Tuesday in denouncing an industry-backed proposal that could limit dramatically the scientific studies the Environmental Protection Agency considers in shaping protections for human health.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said today that he has joined his senate colleagues in introducing legislation that would ensure gun dealers are not engaging in illegal sales and provide the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) with clear enforcement mechanisms.

"Gun violence deserves more than just thoughts and prayers, it demands real action by Congress," Wyden said. "This legislation takes a long-overdue critical step in the right direction, holding gun dealers accountable for illegal sales, reducing the number of guns that fall into the wrong hands."

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) announced that Community Action Team Inc. of Columbia County received $2.16 million in federal funding for its Head Start program. Head Start provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. Community Action Team Inc. of Columbia County has been a Head Start provider for fifty years, since 1968.

The imprisonment of 123 asylum seekers at the federal prison in Sheridan has sparked the creation of a new local activist group called ICE Out of Sheridan.

Members will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at McMinnville Cooperative Ministries, 544 N.E. Second St., to discuss their plans to oppose what they consider to be excesses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
