Washington, D.C.— Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) are urging major banks to allow consumers to block automatic withdrawals taken from their accounts by Internet-based payday lenders. In a letter to the CEOs of the five largest U.S. retail banks, Bonamici and Cummings asked the executives to voluntarily adopt provisions of the Stopping Abuse and Fraud in Electronic (SAFE) Lending Act, H.R. 990, which they introduced in Congress earlier this year.

In a letter sent today to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Acting Director of the Office of Management and Budget Jeffrey Zients, the members expressed grave concern about the retroactive cuts. Bonamici also expressed disappointment at Congress for failing to work together to repeal the sequester.

The measure will fund the government through September 30, 2013. Bonamici expressed disappointment that the bill failed to stop across-the-board sequestration spending cuts initiated by 2011 Budget Control Act.
