Washington, D.C. – Today, Reps. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Oregon) and Elijah E. Cummings (D-Maryland) introduced the Stopping Abuse and Fraud in Electronic (SAFE) Lending Act of 2013 to help protect consumers from predatory lending practices. The legislation would enable consumers to stop automatic bank withdrawals from payday lenders, require that lenders abide by the laws of the state in which they are lending, ban third party “lead generators” that collect applications and auction them to payday lenders, and provide enhanced enforcement authority to federal regulators.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1) today reintroduced the Workforce Infrastructure for Skilled Employees (WISE) Investment Act. The legislation will establish a pilot program to provide grants to eligible workforce investment boards, community colleges, community-based organizations, apprenticeship training programs, and other vocational institutions to hire local business liaisons who will identify and analyze existing skills gaps and find ways to address them.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) is leading Oregon’s congressional delegation in opposition to a plan by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to remove weather monitoring Buoy 46089. The buoy, which sits 85 nautical miles west of Tillamook, Oregon, provides critical early warning data for oncoming storms. NOAA cited cost concerns in a December 2012 announcement of plans to remove the buoy upon its failure. Bonamici and other Oregon lawmakers support repairing the buoy instead.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today released the following statement on the failure to reach a deal that would prevent automatic, across-the-board cuts known as sequestration from taking effect on March 1, 2013. Bonamici released a report earlier in the week detailing the effects of the cuts in Oregon.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today voted in support of the U.S. Senate’s version of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The bill passed the U.S. House with bipartisan support by a vote of 286 - 138 On February 12, the Senate passed the bill also with bipartisan support. The President is expected to sign the bill into law.

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today called for bipartisan cooperation to avert sequestration and released a new report that details how the across-the-board cuts would impact Oregon. According to the report entitled “Sequestration by the Numbers - A Snapshot for Oregon,” the state would suffer nearly 12,000 job losses, and lose substantial federal funding for an array of essential programs.
