U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, newly empowered with leadership of a House subcommittee, says she wants to press forward with the renewal of federal spending authority for programs that help older people.
The latest three-year extension of the Older Americans Act, a law first passed in 1965, is due to expire this fall.
Bonamici, a Democrat from Beaverton, now leads a new panel of the House Education and Labor Committee that is starting work on the renewal, among its duties of overseeing civil rights and human services.

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici pledged to continue opposition to legislation renewing federal support for crop prices and food aid unless the bill is changed to make it less onerous to people in need.
"There is no reason in America for anybody to be hungry," said Bonamici, a Democrat from Beaverton who represents the 1st District of northwest Oregon. "It's not that we don't have the resources. It's a matter of priorities and making it happen."

WASHINGTON – Today Congresswomen Karen Bass (D-CA) and Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) introduced a resolution to raise awareness about the barrage of fraud attempts that seniors face nationwide. The resolution encourages Congress to implement policies to prevent senior scams from happening and to improve protections from these scams. The resolution would also support the designation of May 15, 2018, as "National Senior Fraud Awareness Day".
Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) announced six town hall meetings across the First Congressional District, which includes Washington, Yamhill, Clatsop, and Columbia counties and part of Multnomah County.
Bonamici will take questions from residents and provide an update on her work in Congress. The town hall meetings will be held in Portland, Beaverton, McMinnville, St. Helens, Forest Grove, and Astoria.
