After a months-long battle with brain cancer, Oregon Secretary of State Dennis Richardson died Tuesday night. He was 69-years-old.

Richardson announced last June that doctors had found a small tumor in his brain.

His office said that he died around 9 p.m.while at home, surrounded by friends and family

Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, who served in the state legislature with Richardson, says that, "I always valued his contributions and commitment. He was a great public servant who dedicated much of his life to Oregon and our country.

The death of Oregon Secretary of State Dennis Richardson, who'd battled brain cancer for the last seven months, has saddened state lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Richardson, who was 69, died at his home surrounded by family and friends, according to his office.

WASHINGTON, DC [02/27/19] – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) praised the passage of landmark legislation to help prevent gun violence.

Bonamici is a co-sponsor of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, which would require background checks for almost all firearm sales and transfers. The bill passed on Wednesday, making it the first major legislation on gun violence prevention to be passed by the House of Representatives in decades.

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, newly empowered with leadership of a House subcommittee, says she wants to press forward with the renewal of federal spending authority for programs that help older people.

The latest three-year extension of the Older Americans Act, a law first passed in 1965, is due to expire this fall.

Bonamici, a Democrat from Beaverton, now leads a new panel of the House Education and Labor Committee that is starting work on the renewal, among its duties of overseeing civil rights and human services.
