M. Speaker,
I rise today in support of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, long overdue legislation to address gun violence in our schools and neighborhoods. Although this legislation is far from perfect, it is an important step forward in solving the epidemic of gun violence that has gripped our nation for decades.
In the early days of the pandemic, I heard from seniors who were isolated and worried about how they would get their next meal. I helped to lead Congress with quick action to fund Older Americans Act programs through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and later through the CARES Act. Congress continued that support in the Spring of 2021 with the American Rescue Plan.
We must do all we can to safely evacuate every American and as many Afghans as possible whose lives are at risk under Taliban rule. I joined Congresswoman Grace Meng and others in calling on President Biden to expedite the relocation of Afghans who assisted the U.S. and our allies, women's rights leaders, journalists, and others who are in danger.
